Visiting Vanke

Vanke is a large residential real estate developer in China. It is engaged in developing, managing and selling properties across more than 60 mainland Chinese cities in the Pearl River Delta, Yangtze River Delta and Bohai-Rim Region, with the provision of investment, trading, consultancy services and e-business. Activites range from building houses and railroads to ski-centers and providing real estate services and e-commerce platforms. It also has expanded into Hong Kong, the United States, the United Kingdom and Malaysia since 2012. It is a listed company whose largest shareholder is Shenzhen Metro. Vanke’s revenue was in 2017 530 Bn RMBs (66 Bn€) and ROE was at 21%. Its headquarter is located in Shenzhen, Guangdong province.

We had the opportunity to visit Vankes headquarters in Dameisha Shenzhen. The headquarter is located in a beach resort, only some hundred meters from the beach. The buildings are like from a futuristic movie. They are constructed on structures above the ground to let wind pass underneath it and allow a view to the surrounding hills. The building also hosts school and sport facilities that demonstrate the company’s values for social responsibility. A lot of consideration has also been given to ecology. Water is collected and treated and after that circulated to fish pools that create a unique atmosphere to the inner yard and meeting rooms beneath. Recycled materials are extensively used in structures and on the walls to create unique sound qualities in the auditorium as well as in art pieces that are found on hallways. Bamboo is used extensively in glued surfaces and structures. The structures demonstrate a 21st century Chinese company that wants to fill its obligations not only towards shareholders, but also to the society and enviroment.
